Since 40 years TERRA develops and manufactures high-end technology systems for trenchless underground pipe and cable laying. TERRA was founded by Dr. Eng. Gustav Jenne in the year 1975, who invented the so called ‚moles‘ (underground piercing tools) for trenchless pipe installation. It’s been 40 years since this revolutionary step found its way into the European market – a reason to celebrate! Beneath the European guests, customers from South Africa, Russia and Israel were at the celebration. Even from far Brazil some guests arrived to follow the event. More than 15 nations came together. For drinking, dining and music the event managers organised a party tend. All the guests felt very well. The combination of human and innovative technology was in the center of the celebrations. TERRA presented during the celebrations its wide product range. Next to the products for displaceable methods like underground piercing tools, steel pipe ramming systems and thrust boring machines, TERRA also showed its steerable HDD machines like the TERRA-JET and the TERRA MINI-JET. The TERRA-JET is used for new pipe installation from the surface. The TERRA MINI-JET is the strongest pit launch machine in its class. Machines for pipe renewal like the cable bursters TERRA-EXTRACTOR were presented to the guests as well. In the outside area of the company different demonstrations of the machines took place. Customers and dealers were able to work with the machines themselves. The enthusiasm by the customers was formally felt. One of the highlights was definitely the new HDD machine TERRA-JET TJ 2808 S, a 8-tonnes drill-rig with 2.800 Nm of torque. The demonstration of the new PE-knife for pipe renewal encounter enthusiasm. No other manufacturer worldwide produces tools for HDPE-pipes at the moment, where you can cut the old pipe successfully without pressing the old pipe together. The renewal of old steel pipes was presented to the guests as well. With the smallest roller-cutter in the world old steel pipes 1 ¼“ can be renewed. «I am astonished to see, with how much passion and commitment TERRA develops and produces its product», said a British customer after the demonstrations. In the inside area of the company an exhibition was presented to the guests. The production flow consisting of Research & Development, production and assembly was shown. All parts with Know-How are produced at the manufacturer. Some parts are produced with an accuracy of 1/100 mm. Swiss precision and engineering are in all TERRA products. At the exhibition the first underground piercing tool from 1975 was presented as well. The family-owned business is now in its 3rd generation. Employees, dealers and customers secure a sustainable and future-oriented business success. TERRA sells its products in over 80 countries worldwide and is one of the global leaders for trenchless technologies. TERRA has one of the widest product ranges in the trenchless market. ETH Zurich was founded in 1854 by the Swiss Confederation and opened its doors in 1855 as a polytechnic institute (Eidgenössische Polytechnische Schule). It comprised in the beginning six departments: architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, forestry, and a catch-all department for mathematics, natural sciences, literature, and social and political sciences. ETH is a federal institute (i.e., under direct administration by the Swiss government), whereas the University of Zurich is a cantonal institution. The decision for a new federal university was heavily disputed at the time, because the liberals pressed for a "federal university", while the conservative forces wanted all universities to remain under cantonal control, with the goal of giving liberal thoughts no refuge. In the beginning, both universities were colocated in the buildings of the University of Zurich. In 1909, the course program of ETH was restructured to that of a real university, from its early, very schoolish agenda, and ETH was granted the right to award doctorates. In 1911, it was given its current name, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule. In 1924, another reorganization structured the university in 12 departments. However, it now has 16 departments. Interior skylights in the main building Since 1993 ETH Zürich, the EPFL, and four associated research institutes were joined and administered together as the "ETH Bereich". http://www.universitieshandbook.com

The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is a railway tunnel in the heart of the Swiss Alps expected to open in 2016. With a route length of 57 km (35.4 mi) and a total of 151.84 km (94.3 mi) of tunnels, shafts and passages, it is the world's longest rail tunnel, surpassing the Seikan Tunnel in Japan. Its main purpose is to increase total transport capacity across the Alps, especially for freight, notably between Germany and Italy, and more particularly to shift freight volumes from road to rail to reduce environmental damage caused by ever-increasing numbers of heavy lorries. A secondary benefit will be to cut the journey time for passenger trains from Zürich to Milan by about an hour and from Zürich to Lugano to 1-hour 40 minutes. The project consists of two single-track tunnels. It is part of the AlpTransit project, also known as the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA), which includes the Lötschberg Base Tunnel between the cantons of Bern and Valais and the under construction Ceneri Base Tunnel (scheduled to open late 2019) to the south. It bypasses the Gotthardbahn, a winding mountain route opened in 1882 across the Saint-Gotthard Massif, which is now operating at capacity, and establishes a direct route usable by high-speed rail and heavy freight trains. The total cost of the project is 9.8 billion Swiss francs, or US$10.3 billion. When completed, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be one of the longest tunnel construction projects in the world: 20 years of constant construction and preparation.

Swiss engineer, Frédéric Guerne, has dedicated half his life to making machines that clear mines. He has now developed what he believes is the best minesweeper in existence. (SRF/swissinfo.ch) Guerne is the director of the non-profit Digger Foundation in Tavannes in the Jura, which has produced an armoured 12-ton, remote-controlled precision machine for clearing mines, the fourth generation model. The D-250 is otherwise known as the “Excavator”, and it does the job of 300 people in the field. The D-250 digs up mines from the ground, removes them from trees and detonates them. Even mines with up to 10 kilograms of explosives cannot harm the device. It is used in around 15 countries worldwide. Guerne started his work in 1998 in his farmhouse. For many years he worked voluntarily on new prototypes. He says,"When I think of the children who are still living thanks to our machines, it gives me the energy to keep going.” Land mines are weapons of mass destruction, which do not discriminate between civilians and combatants. The use and production of antipersonnel mines is banned under the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. But still, in 2015 an average of 18 people around the world lost their lives or limbs every day to landmines or other explosive remnants of war. Over 6,460 people were hurt or killed in that year and the number continues to rise. The Nobel Peace Prize for 1997 went to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) for its work on the banning and clearing of anti-personnel mines. But there are still vast mined areas in many former war zones, and less and less money is spent on the expensive demining of the areas. In the series 'Swiss Pioneers', Swiss Public Television, SRF, meets Swiss nationals at home and abroad who have made a name for themselves in their area of expertise. --- swissinfo.ch is the international branch of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).
